There will always be a time when your dog will come across something it should not touch or even eat. When I go on my daily walks with my little dog, we walk next to the neighborhood dumpster and my dog always seems to find some kind of food someone forgot to throw out fully. I have to pull her away quickly with the “leave it” command. My dog is very stubborn though so it usually a struggle.

Teaching the command

This command is very important so the steps to ensure your dog learns it are detailed but make sure you are using lots of treats to help them understand that this command it good for both you and your stubborn pooch. When you are teaching this command use a cheery tone, this helps them understand you giving them information and not a warning. This will help them understand it better.

Implementing the command

Practice the command whenever you can, help them to get used to it. Do this often and make sure you reward every single time your dog “leaves it” alone whatever it may be. This command it so handy in every day life.

The SPCA has a great article and detailed instructions on how to teach this command. It may take a while to learn but the results are very rewarding!
